–Joe to Josephine Reacher., Pie |
Joseph "Joe" Reacher was the older brother of Jack Reacher, whose words inspire the younger Reacher to travel to Margrave. Jack is swept into a conspiracy to frame him for murder, but things become personal when the body in the morgue is identified as Joe.
Biography[]
Joe is two-years older than Reacher[1]. As their father was in the U.S. Marines, they spent a good deal of their childhood moving with their father as he was transferred from one assignment to another.
Throughout Series[]
In Welcome to Margrave, a man is shot to death by night near Margrave, then brutally kicked and thereafter covered with cardboard to hide the body. When Jack Reacher arrives in the town next morning, he is arrested for murder because he has been seen near the crime scene.
- In a flashback to his childhood, Reacher remembers when he and his family moved to an Army base in Okinawa in 1998. A removal box is on fire because he had packed fireworks. His mother asks him why trouble always seems to find him. He and his brother Joe then walk to the beach. They run into the other base kids and one shoves Reacher, and the two brothers remove their jackets to fight. Joe remarks to Reacher that their mom is right - trouble does find him.
In the present, Reacher tells Roscoe Conklin that Joe is the only family he has left. Joe talked to him about Blind Blake a while ago, read an article that Blind Blake performed his last show in Margrave, and decided to visit.
When Reacher, Roscoe and Finlay arrive at the morgue, the medical examiner Jasper explains that the first John Doe is hard to identify as his fingertips were compromised by a dermatitis reaction and his dental work is inconsistent - some done in the US and some foreign. Reacher sees the monitor with a photo of the victims hand. He picks it up and admits the victim was allergic to latex so the killers must have worn a polyvinyl protective suit. The dental work is off because he had them fixed wherever he was living at the time. He broke his right arm when he was eight and had it set in Berlin. His tonsils were taken out at ten in Seoul. The examiner removes the body and shows Reacher the face. He emotionally picks up the mans hand and sees a scar on the left wrist. He tells that they were wrestling when he pinned him against a stove without knowing it was hot. That's how his brother got the scar. As they drive back to town, Reacher wonders if Joe told him about Blind Blake for a reason so he could so he could do something about his brother's murder. Finlay wonders what he'll do. Reacher thinks he'll find everybody responsible and kill them.
In First Dance,
In Spoonful,
In In a Tree,
In No Apologies,
In Reacher Said Nothing, Reacher arrives in Atlanta and notices a man pulling a wheeled suitcase.
- He remembers his family packing up for a move to Germany. Joe says it is a punishment because Germany is boring. Their mother is telling them some things that may not make sense now but will someday. She tells Joe that he can't solve all the world's problems and that solving some is enough. She tells Reacher the he has the strength of 3 boys his size, but what will he do with that strength? She tells him that he will do what's right.
In Pie, KJ admits that he was the one who killed Joe. Reacher concludes that Dawson kicked Joe's body around while Morrison hid the body.
As Reacher is about to leave Margrave, he takes out his Grandfather's WWII medal and looks at it.
- He remebers the day when he and Joe, both in military uniforms, visit their mother shortly before her death in Paris. She repeats what she had said to them years ago in Okinawa. She then gives Reacher the medal.
Reacher places the medal in the ground near to where Joe was killed.
