Mayor Grover Teale is a character appearing in the novel Killing Floor.
In Killing Floor[]
Mayor Teale first appears at the police station following police chief Morrison’s death, taking over as chief himself. Reacher witnesses him being harsh against Sergeant Baker by holding him against a wall.
Reacher later meets Teale outside the station, where the mayor expresses his condolences for Reacher’s brother’s death. Reacher is seemingly not amused, but acknowledges Teale’s condolences.
Teale is described as eyeing Reacher, Roscoe and Finlay upon their return to the station from Atlanta. Soon after, he departs the station in his Cadillac.
Upon Reacher’a return from checking out the Kliner kid’s truck, Teale is in the office talking to Finlay. When Reacher enters, Teale questions if Reacher has rejoined the Army, given his new clothes. Reacher tells him that he shouldn’t be one to judge other people’s clothing, seemingly offending Teale. He tells Reacher he could have him arrested for using such language, before exiting the office and making a phone call.
Following Reacher and Finlay’s return from Atlanta, Teale joins Picard and corners them in the office, carrying a shot gun. They are joined by Kliner and Sergeant Baker. Teale eyes Reacher with hatred in his eyes while Kliner informs the two of the situation, notably that Charlie Hubble, her kids and Roscoe are captured.
While Reacher is talking with the Barber's elderly sister about the musician Blind Blake, she tells Reacher a 62 year old story about his death. In her story, Grover Teale is about 10, and is walking down a street in Margrave with his father. Blind Blake and the Barber's sister are also walking down the street, but Blind Blake accidentally bumps into Grover who falls down and gets a cut on his head. He starts crying and demands that his father punish Blake. His Father beats Blind Blake with his cane until he is dead and then demands that the Barber's sister wash off the blood and hair.
Teale is together with Kliner in the third warehouse building, setting Charlie Hubble and Roscoe to work with storing money in boxes. Reacher has Finlay pour out gasoline and then set fire to it. The fire follows the gasoline into the pyramids of money, which Teale detects and panics. Reacher then shoots his head off from a distance, instantly killing him.
