Synopsis[]

Reacher finds a key which belongs to a trunk left by Roscoe's deceased former boss Gray, containing research that confirms Reacher's suspicions that Margrave is the heart of Kliner's counterfeiting operation. Reacher joins up with his old comrade, Frances Neagley, to find a hitman who may have been Joe's murderer. Roscoe learns that it was probably Mayor Teale that murdered her old boss Gray, and confronts him by punching him in the mouth. Finlay drags her away and she replaces Picard as the Hubble family's bodyguard. Reacher and Neagley survive an attempt on their lives by a crooked cop. Finlay breaks into Kliner's office only to find that Kliner has just been killed.

Plot[]

With the murder of Molly Beth Gordon weighing heavily on their minds, Roscoe, Finlay and Reacher vow to press forward to find the killers.

Arriving back in Margrave, they pass the house where they have previously seen a mistreated dog. Finlay stops the car and Reacher and Finlay enter the yard and remove the dog's collar that is cutting into him. The owner approaches, yelling about them being in their yard and is promptly punched in the face by Reacher who then puts the dogs collar on him and asks him how it feels. The dog goes with them and hops into the car to the surprise of Roscoe. Reacher asks to be taken to the Hubble home because he needs a new car as the other one is full of bullet holes.

Driving the Hubble's Bentley, Reacher makkes his way back to the police station where he sees that someone has spray painted the word "whore" on the side of Roscoe's truck. Reacher jumps back into the car and drives off to confront KJ as he knows that he had been the one to vandalize Roscoe's truck. Roscoe gets Finlay and they go in search of Reacher to try and keep him from doing something regrettable. Reacher spots KJ's truck outside a cafe and goes in to confront him. When KJ starts to insult Roscoe, a fight breaks out and Reacher quickly puts KJ and his companions on the floor. KJ jumps up and grabs a knife just as Roscoe and Finlay arrive to keep Reacher from inflicting more damage. Mr. Kliner enters the room and demands that Reacher be arrested for assault. Finlay asks Roscoe to take Reacher outside.

Roscoe receives a call from Teale and he tells her that he discovered that she is not focusing her investigation on finding the killers of the Morrison's. He fires her for her "shoddy" police work. Roscoe is defiant and tells Finlay that she's not turning in her gun, he tells her that with all that's foing on, that he doesn't want her to. Then Finlay says that the Kliners are not pressing charges against Reacher.

Reacher suspects that Gray may have left something behind since he gave Roscoe his Desert Eagle a full year before he alledgely commited suicide, and that didn't make sense. The team head over to Roscoe's to examine the box that the gun was in. Reacher finds a secret compartment that contains a key. At first, they don't know what it could open, but when Reacher remembers that Roscoe told him that the bald Gray used to go to the barbersop weekly, Reacher realizes that there must be something there. When they arrive at the barbershop, Mosley tells Roscoe that Gray told him not to give the large file cabinet to anyone byut her and that he was "proud of his girl".. The box contains very detailed records of the Kliner's financial transactions, proving that his organization distributes far more money than it brings in, which leads the team to deduce that the Kliner's are operating a large counterfeiting scheme and that the money paid to the people and businesses of Margrave essentially buy their loyalty.

Reacher realizes that the town of Margrave is perfectly situated as a central hub for distribution, and Finlay points out that the Coast Guard blockade has kept the Kliner's from receiving their counterfeit cash, and that the recent killings show that the Kliner's are panicking because they can't supply to their customers. Suddenly, Roscoe coms to the realization that Gray was murdered also and storms out of the barbershop with Finlay following.

Reacher has another childhood flashback of when his mother was making him and Joe get haircuts and then dressed up in the best clothes to visit General Bishop and apologize for beating up their son. Joe offers his apology, but when Josephine prods Reacher, at first he resists, but then he apologizes, however, his apology is to tell them that he is sorry that both sides of the boy's face were not equally damaged. Reacher smirks as he walks away. The present day lesson is that bad people should get what's coming to them, no apologies. He tells this to Roscoe and Finlay.

Reacher gets a cryptic call from Neagley who says that she wanted to have dinner at 10 but instead had it at 6. Reacher knows that 10-6 is the Military Police code meaning to send civilian police. Neagley didn't want to say anything on an unsecured line, but she knew that Reacher would figure it out and also realize that she was poking fun at him by referring to him as being a civilian. Reacher needs to go to Memphis, but Roscoe can't understand how Reacher will find her. Reacher tells them how he intends to track her down and when he arrives in Memphis, picks the exact diner where she is. They go to a large public park where they can talk freely. Neagley tells Reacher that one of the names on Joe's list was an EPA agent that was murdered, allegedly during a robbery. However, Neagley points out that the report indicates he was killed with a 9mm, subsonic bullet, which means that the robber used a silencer. Also, nothing was taken during the robbery, so the determination that he died during a robbery is suspicious. Neagley says that a Memphis cop also had suspicions about his killing, but dropped it when the FBI took over the investigation. This cop tells Neagley that he would meet with her and introduce her to one of his CIs (Confidential Informants) to see if he has any info. Neagley also tells Reacher that the body of the dead EPA agent was savaged after he was dead. When Reacher tells her that is what happened to Joe, Neagley realizes how important this is to Reacher and warns him that he needs to be careful. Neagley says that the EPA agent was investigation unusually high levels of pollution in the Mississippi and that the final page of his report is missing. She says that the stretch of the river that the Investigator was looking into was near the town of Chester, Alabama. Reacher says that they need to go there.

Roscoe visits Jasper, the Medical Examiner to see if there is anything about the suicide of her mentor Gray that was unusual. Roscoe asks Jasper if Gray could have been struck on the head instead of him hitting his head in a fall as was reported in the investigation notes. Jasper pulls up a photograph that shows the head wound and upon magnification, notices a diamond shaped pattern. Roscoe acts as if that confirms her suspicion and she hurries out of Jasper's office.

Reacher and Neagley arrive in Chester and talk to an old fisherman who says that a company named Clarron Chemicals was responsible for the pollution but that the EPA didn't do anything about it. Neagley uses her smartphone to look up the company and finds that it was dissolved some years before and that it was owned by Kliner Industries.

After her visit with Jasper, Roscoe bursts into the Margrave Police Station and punches Teale twice in the face before she is restrained by Finlay and Baker. Finlay drags her out to his vehicle where he berates her for her actions which prove to Teale that they are aware of what is going on in Margrave. Finlay tells her that she can't be seen in Margrave because Teale will swear out a warrant for her arrest. He takes her to a motel and then gets a call from Picard who tells him that he can't keep watch over Charlie and her daughters any more. This works out perfectly, because now Roscoe can stay with them while staying out of sight herself.

Neagley receives word from her contact in the Memphis PD that his informant is ready to talk so she and Reacher arrange to meet with them at a strip club. they learn that the man who killed the EPA agent was known as "The Viking".

As they are leaving the strip club, riding in the back of the police car, the driver shoots and kills his partner because he was told to keep quiet by the Kliner group. As Reacher and Neagley discover that they are trapped in the back of the car and the officer tells him that he is going to kill them next, the both kick on the back of the driver's seat, forcing the driver to lose control of the car and plunge into a river. Reacher and Neagley manage to get out of the submerged vehicle and leave the officer to die. They find a clothing donation bin and put on dry clothes as they decide to split up with Neagley going back to Memphis to find out more about "The Viking". Reacher is going back to Margrave to work with Finlay.

Finlay breaks in to the Kliner Industries building to try to find financial information to prove out the counterfeiting conspiracy. When he enters Kliner's office, he finds him dead, with his throat torn apart in a manner known as the Venezuelan butterfly cut.
