Synopsis[]

As a rising body count threatens his undercover position, Reacher makes a dangerous play to secure Beck’s trust.

Plot[]

John Chapman Duke drives Jack Reacher back to Beck's estate and reveals Ángel Dole had news but refused to elaborate further to anyone with Duke speculating it as his ploy of getting promotion. Reacher is let off of his duty for the day and gets to know Annette who had come from Le Havre, France and arrived at Maine to study marine biology with maid-work paying for her tuition. Duke later summons him to Beck in regards to Dole's voicemail not adding up with the details. At office, Zachary tells Reacher that Dolé had traced the vehicles back to the group that he had dealt with with his physicality did not match with anyone in the group. He reasons the truck was stolen as a result of the kidnappers expanding their operation and Richard's second attempt at being kidnapped was done as a message. Reacher implores for more information but is kept in the dark by Zachary.

At night, Frances Neagley informs Reacher of her discoveries. Paul Van Hoven and Dole were in the military before being dishonourably discharged as a result of their continuous sexual harassment and repeated acts of violence with Duke being a former cop turned convict. Neagley implores to let her support him on field but is shut out by Reacher who gives her the untraceable number. Immediately after, Reacher asks Duffy to park the car a mile from the house before diving near coastal sea and making it to the otherside. Reacher is surprised of her arrival but is told she will be coming with him for potential leads on Teresa's disappearance.

Arriving at the warehouse, they searched for signs of Teresa but turn up empty-handed. Reacher decides to use Crate 13 to hide Dole's body and takes his gun. While cleaning Dole's blood, Sklar and Bellinger arrive at the warehouse, expecting Dole. Reacher kills the pair and hides their bodies in Crate 14 with Duffy taking Dole's laptop for further info. Returning back to the estate, he hides Dole's gun beneath the jagged rocks. The next day, Sklar and Bellinger were reported missing with Reacher willing to take their shift to transport goods. However, Zachary tasks him to be Richard's protection detail for the day. While making their way, Richard reveals his dad's boss is named Julius McCabe and has been the one to call the shots and organised Beck's security. During the trip, Richard shops for a cap gun for his father's upcoming birthday and Reacher slips away to inform Duffy of new development. The latter stake out at docks with Villanueva for delivery while Reacher figures their answers lies within their circle and seeks to kill Duke and take his "Number 2" spot. Figuring out an opportunity, Reacher has Duffy sent email from Dole's account to Beck, listing an empty DEA safehouse as the kidnappers group location.

Outside, Richard is confronted by old bullies who were mad his father had upended their lives to further expand his operation. Reacher arrives and intercepts the confrontation, warning them to walk away when they see Richard. Afterwards, Richard expressed the desire to live off-grid away from his father who he has mixed feelings towards. Reacher persuades him to tell him more about his father's business only to be told McCabe was controlling every aspects of their business and lives. He had him kidnapped and Paulie cut his ear off as a way to intimidate Zachary into assimilating his business with that of McCabe's activities. Zachary was targeted as he had bragged means to get around customs and dock managers with McCabe getting wind of it. At the docks, Duffy spots Quinn who she speculates to be McCabe. Back at the cabin, Cooper tries to appeal Eliot into letting him go but fails and intentionally injures himself to get access to bottle of open alcohol.

At night, Zachary recruits Duke and Reacher to aforementioned DEA safehouse with the latter rushing to get back Dole's gun. On route, Zachary expresses his frustration to the kidnappers and learns of the events in town due to Earl Mattingly, the owner of Pastry Peddler. However, Duke believes Richard needed to be beaten as a way to toughen up. Arriving at the location, Reacher falsely informs Duke of the situation and holds him at gunpoint, demanding to know Teresa's location. However, Duke remains uncooperative and Reacher shoots him in the head. In order to fabricate a shootout, Reacher empties the guns and sets the house to explode. Rushing back outside, Reacher informs Zachary that Duke was killed in an ambush and Dole's gun was found with them while pointing out he was also the one who sent the location. Furthermore, he successfully framed Sklar, Bellinger and Dole as moles with Zachary turning to Reacher as his "Number 2".
