Plot[]
In Abbottsvile, Maine, Jack Reacher was selling his collection of old vinyl records to Jerry, owner of Forty Four until he spots Richard Beck, an arts student from Havenhurst Univeristy in an kidnapping attempt. The kidnapper incapacitates Beck's bodyguard John Cooper before attempting to take him away. However, Reacher intercepts, leading to the kidnapper's death and the accidental shooting of an unnamed cop. Panicked, Reacher decides to escort Beck away from the scene but not before being chased by campus security. Laying low nearby, Reacher covers his tracks and tries to get new I.D for a fresh beginning. Not willing to leave Reacher's protection, Richard offers him sanctuary at his father's home, a mansion situated near the coast of Maine. They arrived to meet Zachary Beck and his head of security John Chapman Duke and big muscle Paul Van Hoven.
Zachary, an owner of rugs import company Bizarre Bazaar, is grateful for Reacher's protection and willing to offered a job to pay off money needed to cover his tracks. Reacher leaves behind his prints for Zachary's team to uncover his identity. During waiting, Reacher visits a shaken up Richard who tells him his mother passed away when he was 4. Duke summons him to the nearby guest house, having thorough checks with his prints. Zachary decides to test his willingness to comply by playing Russian Roulette. At first, Reacher is reluctant before being forced to go through the ordeal by Beck's security team. Reacher passes through the test but spooks them by willing to play 3 more rounds. After finished, Reacher deduces the bullet was a dud as it had no powder but is immediately contradicted by Duke who shoots at a nearby barrel. Before leaving, Reacher notices the drip goes downwards at a nearby gap. Duke escorted to his room at the top of the mansion before leaving him. Reacher checks for signs of camera at nearby furniture and fixtures before calling someone, informing he was in.
Days prior in Maine, Reacher spots his old adversary Francis Xavier Quinn at a nearby store and decides to call Powell, a member of Turner's rendition of U.S. Army 110th MP Special Investigations Unit to run for his license plate. However, Powell is unable to deliver as the website crashed. Resting at a nearby motel, Reacher is visited by DEA agents Susan Duffy, her mentor Guillermo Villanueva and rookie Steven Eliot. Duffy reveals Powell had given up his location after being threatened with obstruction to the investigation charges and had tracked the license plate. Weeks ago, a drug lord from L.A flew to Maine for a meeting with Bizzare Bazaar which they suspected to be his supplier but can't dig up information about the company with the car had been used for the meeting. They asked him to enter Zachary's security to investigate his company Bizzare Bazaar, suspecting of illegal goods transportation. Reacher is unwilling to cooperate with them unless they checked Quinn's hospital records in Linton, Virgina on around March 13th, 2012.
A day later, they discovered Quinn was washed ashore on a beach near the area and saved due to hypothermia which slowed his heart and prevented brain damage. Six months after, he was treated for his injuries which was psychiatrically identified as traumatic amnesia, believing Quinn's fake story after a consistent time of telling it without holes. Reacher reveals Quinn was a rogue Lieutenant who had sold military secrets to hostile nations and had his prints and files erased through his M.I connections. Duffy realises Quinn was the man Reacher had seen back then and proposes an alliance. Outside, Duffy reveals she was tracking L.A drug dealer Darien Prado but unable to arrest due to Prado being surveyed over private property which caused submitted evidence void. She intended to net in Prado and Beck and had sent her C.I Teresa Daniel as his secretary to attained information. However, a week prior, Teresa disappeared and was unreachable. Duffy is unwilling to involve law enforcements due Teresa's past and current circumstances and asked Reacher to be an undercover informant. Assuming the worse, Reacher deduces Teresa was likely dead due to close association with Quinn but is willing to help.
They surveyed Richard who was kidnapped 5 years ago and had his ear partially cut off. Duffy devised the plan to have Richard kidnapped again and in turn bring him closer to Zachary's operation. Reacher suggests to use flashbang grenade to disorient his bodyguard and use his vacant position as an opening, and hold the other indefinite for information. Eliot volunteers to be the kidnapper due to him feeling guilty for misreading surveyor's map and cost them Prado's arrest and Villanueva poses as a nearby cop to trigger the blood bag for the shootout as well as eliminating the option of going to police. To put up the convincing story, Reacher mixes live ammo with blanks and marks on the revolver. They decide to station Reacher around Forty Four record shop and gives away Villanueva's records. To keep up communication, Duffy gives him an untraceable satellite phone hidden beneath the boot's heel with 2 week battery life.
At present day, Reacher informs his situation to Duffy with Cooper being treated for his injuries at an isolated cabin. He deduces Teresa was being kept beneath the hidden cellar in the carriage house and investigates the area at 3 AM. However, he finds out Teresa was moved away and recovers one of her earrings.
