Synopsis[]
After more of his friends fall victim, Reacher forges an uneasy alliance with a dogged detective, and their only clue in the case leads the 110th to a troubling discovery.
Plot[]
Somewhere in New Age, Calvin Franz is tortured by Shane Langston's men for information. He does spill information even though he has been severely beaten including having both of his legs broken. After Franz defiantly spits blood in Langston's face, he orders his men to take Franz to the helicopter. High above Catskill mountains, Langston gives him a last chance to release the information he's looking for, but he wonders what the "big guy" will do to him. Langston orders his men to dump him out. After closing the doors, he wonders the identity of the "big guy".
In the present, Reacher is in a gun shop where he bribes the owner Frank Majeske into selling him weapons without waiting for law. During their drive back to New York, Reacher and Dixon tease O'Donnell's shooting skills, comparing it to him "couldn't hit a donkey's ass with a banjo". Neagley discovers another motel Jade East in Belt Parkway which can serve as their hideout. Among their banter, they are unknowingly tailed by a police cruiser, signaling them to pull over. Reacher asks Dixon to pull over and the officer orders them to wait. Sometime after, Russo arrives and arrests Reacher once identified, Reacher asks O'Donnell to act as his lawyer since he had some experience in Rutgers. He tasks Neagley and Dixon to investigate New Age. O'Donnell accompanies Reacher and Russo to the station. Inside the car, Russo reveals he tracked them by obtaining security footage from car rental companies at the airport and had recognized them when they were renting a car. He tracked the plate and monitored if it had gone back to New York when a cruiser spotted and reported them in. While being transported in the back seat of Russo's car, Reacher and O'Donnell discover a bag full of kids toys much to his ire.
In New Age, Dixon and Neagley meet Director of Operations Marlo Burns about possible information on the parking pass. The pair inform her of the current case and gain her cooperation when they mentioned the victims were close friends of theirs. Sometime after, Marlo tells them the pass belongs to Trevor Saropian who had been chasing after them and killed by Reacher. Days prior, Saropian had been there for an interview, offering maintenance services but is rejected due to their small operation. Marlo is able to provide his address as the company still has his resume on their files.
Meanwhile, Reacher recognizes he was brought here for possible information related to his case as his arrest was not processed. Russo announces their efforts are actively interfering with his investigation. They begin to show reluctant goodwill and exchange information based on their desire to solve the case. Russo reveals Franz's phone logs have multiple calls addressed to O'Donnell, Sanchez, Swan and Orozco, but none to Reacher who does not carry a phone. Reacher relents and proposes a deal in which they share information about the case. They share the phrase "650 at 100K" in which they assumed to be 65 million dollars though cannot determined how and what the money is for. When Russo insinuates his friends were criminals involved, Reacher angrily confronts him and accuses him of being a dirty cop through him tailing them without identifying himself, gathers information without making a formal arrest in order to keep the matter off the books, Russo insists he is not a dirty cop. The tension is resolved through O'Donnell's intervention, and asks him to keep the integrity through him sharing info they have not known. Russo announces they have a suspect which was discovered through a memory card left inside a printer in Franz's office. The print reveals a man by the name of Azhari Mahmoud who is known to INTERPOL as a weapons broker for terrorist organizations, and Sanchez's notes indicate he is the man of interest. Reacher realizes Sanchez and Orozco had dug out information for Franz's ongoing case. Noticing the name has A.M. initials, Reacher writes the list from before and tells Russo to have DHS flag all of his aliases. Reacher and O'Donnell realize the case is bigger than they have initially thought.
Back in their military days, Tony Swan, Reacher, Dixon and O'Donnell are at a crime scene outside an Officer's Club with a man, Private Simms, shot in the back. O'Donnell believes it's a bar brawl gone wrong, but Swan confirms Simms was not involved in any fight that led up to his demise. Reacher deduces Simms was running for his life as his pant cuffs are stained with muddy rainwater and had tripped in a pothole. Additionally, Reacher deduces the ink smudged in his palm resembles a kite belong to someone's drugs. Lieutenant Colonel Hortense Fields visits the scene and is informed of the case and asks give updates. After inspection, Reacher realizes the kite resembles a fighter kite which is popular in Afghanistan where it's central for heroine's production. Sensing a link between this case and one involving aviation fuel, Reacher asks Dixon to look into the case once more as he had an idea what was being transported on the plane.
Back in the present, Neagley and Dixon inspect the numbers. She realises the sequence resemble days and months and every page is equal to a month with the number 26 and 27 resembles to working 6 days a week depending on each days in a month. Additionally, Dixon notices the documents detailed the last 7 months and the numbers in month 1 were decent to abysmal in month 7. The pair begin to question what they were counting.
Sometime later, Russo returns to inform Reacher and O'Donnell that they have a hit on a person who has booked a ticket from Denver to JFK. Elsewhere, A.M. notices several men may be looking for him. In order to test his theory, A.M. accidentally bumps into an officer and notices the suitcase were empty , confirming his suspicion. A.M. escapes and burns his ID and calls Langston to inform him of his delay, causing him to become nervous about not being able to keep on schedule. A.M. condescendingly assures even though this is the first time Langston is partaking, A.M. has done it several times. When Langston asks how he was gonna obtain a new ID, the car passes by an advertisement for cosmetic surgeon M. Elzogby and comes up with an idea.
Afterwards, Reacher and O'Donnell are released and they rejoin Dixon and Neagley in the motel. Reacher asks for information of Saropian's next door neighbour Barbara Gottlesman who he calls to confirm whether Saropian had still live there. She confirms it is his home and they infiltrate the area . Neagley picks the lock with Reacher tossing a pipe bomb which eliminates some. The team kills everyone inside and Reacher spots a vehicle watching them before the driver frantically leaves after realizing he has been noticed. Neagley goes to the rooftop to assist Reacher in locating the car. After chasing a while, Reacher throws a barbecue stand onto the window, causing the car to crash. Reacher pulls the man who is revealed to be a New Age employee named Brian Collins and attempts to interrogate him only for Collins to succumb to a heart attack. Reacher attempts to resuscitate the man but is unsuccessful. He returns to Saropian's residence and inform the group he was not able to obtain any information. The group leave shortly after.
The team returns to the motel where they are confronted by Russo who is appalled at their reckless actions. Reacher knows they were being set up as they doubt an assassin would leave his address which brings up two possibilities. The first being Saropian could have gone to the company and masked his identity and provide a fake address. The second is Saropian was working for New Age as a hitman hired to track the unit down with the real address left behind serving as bait. Russo warns their partnership would only work if they stopped their reckless actions as it had put him in a tight spot when he purposefully misstates their descriptions while taking Gottlesman statement. Additionally, Russo informs of the failed trap which invalidates the given list of aliases as well as names with initials A.M. as the man now know he is being watched. Russo offers to warrant a search into New Age, but tells them to stay put until they hear from him. Reacher gives Russo their burner number and Russo warns him to not commit any more "cowboy" actions. Reacher disregards his warning as his team ram through New Age HQ with their car, Reacher tasks them to loot anything valuable in H.R, Server Room and Director of Operations office. Rhey begin to loot everything they can lay their hands on. While looting, Reacher comes across a photo of employees and collects it. The team burn their disguises and the group looks shocked as they discovered Swan to be one of the employees.
