Synopsis[]
Officer Stevenson and his wife are murdered by a hit squad that appears to be seeking information about Hubble. After Teale fires Finlay, Reacher provides some false information to Officer Baker about him searching the Hubble house that night. Reacher knows that Baker is in on the scheme and he will alert the hit team as to Reacher's plans. The hit team goes to Hubble’s house, where Reacher kills them all, including Kliner’s nephew Dawson. Based on additional information, Reacher figures out how the counterfeit operation works and tells Roscoe, who shares his discovery with Picard. Reacher and Finlay search Jobling’s parents’ house and find boxes of counterfeit bills. They arrange a meet with Picard, but when they arrive, Picard is waiting with KJ and Teale.
Plot[]
At Officer Stevenson's home, he and his wife Emma are getting ready for bed and Stevenson is talking about what's going on down at the Police Station. As they turn out the lights, a truck pulls up in front of the house and 4 men get out dressed in white suits.
Reacher's plane lands in Atlanta and he notices a man pulling a wheeled suitcase which causes him to flash back to a memory when his family is packing up for a move to Germany. His mother is telling him and Joe some things that may not make sense now but will someday. She tells Joe that he can't solve all the world's problems and that solving some is enough. She tells Reacher the he has the strength of 3 boys his size, but what will he do with that strength? She tells him that he will do what's right.
Finlay arrives to pick up Reacher and Reacher tells him that counterfeiting is all about the paper and that Joe thought that he had the one source of the paper locked down tight. Reacher wants to go get the Bentley, but Finlay says that they have to make a stop first. The funeral for Mr. Kliner is being held and Finlay feels the need to be there. At the funeral, Dawson threatens Finlay before he leaves.
When they arrive at the auto shop to pick up the Bentley, Finlay gets a call and he appears stunned as he says that he'll be right there. They arrive at Officer Stevenson's home to find that it is a crime scene and that Stevenson and his wife have been brutally tortured and murdered. Finlay says that this answers their question about whether Stevenson is involved, but Reacher disagrees as he says that the murder of Chief Morrison was all about sending a message, and that this one is different. Stevenson was forced to watch as his wife was tortured, which Reacher surmises was intended to get information from Stevenson. They believe that the killers thought that Stevenson was working with Finlay and Reacher and that he would be able to tell them what they knew. Teale arrives and fires Finlay and tells Reacher to get away from the crime scene.
Finlay tells Reacher that he needs to go to Tupelo to tell Stevenson's parents about their son and daughter-in-law and Reacher says that he is going to have lunch with Officer Baker. At the diner, Reacher gets Baker to believe that Reacher thinks that he is not involved in the killings but that it is Finlay who is dirty. He then tells Baker that he is going to break into the Hubble's house that night to try to uncover any evidence. Baker falls for the deception and tells Reacher to bring back anything he finds to him.
Reacher stops at a sporting goods store and buys some camouflage clothing, a knife and blackjack. He then drives over to the Hubbles' where he puts on the clothes and smears his face with dark green makeup. As Reacher hides outside, Dawson and 4 other men dressed in white suits arrive and break into the house. Reacher goes to the truck and kills the driver. Dawson and his crew are searching the house and two of them notice that the headlights of the truck are flashing. One of them goes to investigate only to be killed by Reacher who dumps his body in the truck bed. Reacher then goes back into the house where he silently kills another man. He then locates another of Dawson's crew and kills him as well. Dawson notices this and shoots at Reacher but Reacher uses the dead man's body as a shield while Dawson empties his gun into him. Reacher and Dawson then fight, with Dawson beating Reacher with a crowbar. They eventually move out to the back where Dawson knocks Reacher into the pool, but Reacher is able to retrieve his gun and shoots Dawson several times, making sure he is dead.
Reacher gathers up all the weapons and puts them into the trunk of the Bentley. Exhausted, Reacher strips out of his clothes and takes a shower. As he is getting dressed, he notices the piece of paper that had the clues from his brother and sees that the writing has faded after getting wet. This leads to him figuring out how the counterfeiters had obtained the paper for their operation. He calls Roscoe to check up on her and tells her what he has realized. Reacher knows that the paper is the key and that since all American paper money is the same size, the counterfeiters are obtaining one dollar bills and bleaching them. Then they can turn them into one hundred dollar bills which are then shipped down to Venezuela where they are put into circulation. Roscoe is excited about this theory, but tells Reacher that they need hard proof before turning over the investigation to the feds. Since Joe had mentioned the Jobling's garage, he decides to go there to investigate. After they disconnect the call, Picard asks Roscoe if everything is OK and she tells him that she thinks that Reacher has solved the case.
Meanwhile, Finlay has just finished telling Officer Stevenson's parents about their son's death and has returned to his motel when Reacher calls to give an update. While talking, Finlay notices that three men who he recognizes as hit men, arrive at the motel and go into the motel office. Reacher tells him how to escape the men by breaking through the wall into the adjoining unit and then escaping out the window. Finlay manages to jump in his car and escape but not before shooting out the tires of the hitmen's car.
Both Reacher and Finlay arrive at the Jobling's house only to find that it was involved in a fire and appears to be a total loss. A neighbor says that Jobling's wife, Judy, had left several days before. Reacher remembers that Judy never changed her last name and as he looks at Joe's notes, he sees that he wrote "Joblings' Garage" using the plural possessive form meaning that they need to go to the parent's home where two Joblings lived. They arrive at the parent's home and are taken to the garage where they find several large Kliner Air Conditioning boxes that contain newly printed One Hundred Dollar bills. Thinking that they have solved the case, they make plans to take the counterfeit bills to Picard and turn the case over to the feds.
On the drive to the safe house, Neagley calls Reacher to tell him that she got a description of the hit man who killed the EPA agent and it matches that of a deceased FBI agent who just happened to be the partner of Agent Picard.
As Reacher enters the safe house, he is confronted by 3 guns pointed in his direction, one by Teale, one by KJ Kliner, and one by Agent Picard. Reacher tells Neagley that he's got to go.
