Biography[]

Shane was a Detective with the NYPD's 3rd precinct. He took early retirement while he was the subject of an Internal Affairs Investigation which was suddenly ended without any charges being brought. After retirement he joined New Age Technologies as Director of Security and recruited other corrupted officers to the security division of New Age. When Malcolm Lavoy authorised and funded Little Wing project which is a Surface to Air Missile (SAM) that has been designed to defeat all existing anti-missile defenses and to fly up and past the target. Langston discovers the project and conspires with his division to steal some of the missiles and sell it to the highest bidder through arms broker A.M. Langston bribes New Age's Engineer Russell Johnson to flag some operational chips and marked them as defective.

Sometime after, Tony Swan is employed by Marlo Burns and pushed him onto the security division after she had noticed the unusual amount of corrupt NYPD officers. Swan discovers about their actions in tampering with Little Wing missiles and relays the info back to Burns. Realised the scope of the project, Swan asks his former unit members Calvin Franz, Manuel Orozco and Jorge Sanchez with the investigation. Eventually, Langston discovers Swan and Burns's meddling and has Swan, Franz, Orozco and Sanchez captured and tortured. He had his subordinates interrogated Orozco and Sanchez before they are beaten mercilessly with a crowbar. Later, they are moved to Catskill Mountains on a helicopter and have their bodies dropped out of the helicopter.

10 days earlier, Langston is watching two of his men torture Franz. He interrupts the beating to tell Franz that he could end the beating if he just tells him what he knows and who else knows it. In response, Franz spits blood in his face. Langston then picks up a crowbar and breaks both of Franz's legs before telling his men to get him ready. They are next shown flying in a helicopter with Franz on a stretcher which is positioned in front of loading doors. Langston gives Franz one last time to tell him what he knows, but Franz laughs and tells Langston that he's just thinking about what the big guy is going to do to him. After the men drop Franz out of the helicopter, Langston wants to know who the big guy is.

Eventually, Swan is offered bribe by Langston but rejects the offer. He's subjected to the same torture method but has his fingers and eye removed in order to bypass New Age's biometrics security in order to ship out items and framed him as the culprit behind the operation. Langston eventually comes to know of the remaining units of U.S. Army 110th MP Special Investigations Unit and fears that all of them might have been on Swan's operation and decides to have them tailed and taken out as potential threats and loose ends. When Burns's involvement is discovered, Langston threatens her and Jane Burns's life and offers her a cut of the share if Burns clears out all of Swan's involvement in the case.

In his effort to tie up loose ends, Langston tasks Trevor Saropian who is a former criminal that is released from prison during his time in NYPD into tracking the remaining members of the unit and kill them. After Neagley learns of Franz's murder, Langston orders Saropian to keep a close watch on Jack Reacher who learns of Franz's murder and Neagley and the hotel they are staying in. After Saropian observes Reacher confronting Gaitano Russo by setting off the airbag in his car, he notifies Langston who tells him just to stay on him and that when it comes time to take him down, he will get backup.

When Franz's murder is reported to NYPD, Langston goes to head of the department and bribes Drew Marsh about case updates as well as to keep New Age's involvement out of the murder. Additionally, Marsh acts as Langston's eyes and ears to Reacher's unit about their own progress in solving the murders through his subordinate Gaitano Russo.

Later, Saropian contacts Langston to tell him that Reacher, Neagley and David O'Donnell met up with Karla Dixon and rented a car under Dixon's name and are now headed toward Atlantic City. Langston figures that they are going there to try to find Orozco and Sanchez and tells Saropian to take them out and wants them dead by the next day. After Reacher and Neagley kill Saropian and his hired accomplices, Reacher calls Langston on Saropian's cell phone. Langston tells Reacher that this won't end well for him to which Reacher asks him why he is the one who is scared. Elsewhere, A.M. arrives at the airport and notices several law enforcement personnel that appear to be looking for him. After verifying, he contacts Langston to inform him that he is going to be delayed. Langston is worried as he questions A.M. of his plan.

When Neagley and Dixon arrives at New Age's HQ to ask information in regards to Saropian, Langston is spooked about their visit as they are getting closer to the truth. Langston instructs Burns to hand Saropian's address in an attempt to catch them off guard and killed. Langston sent Brian Collins, a subordinate of his to oversee the progress and report him back of the results. However, this backfires as Collins is killed shortly after from a heart attack after he was discovered by Reacher.

Sometime after, Langston employs a group of bikers to ambush Reacher and his unit in Boston after he is tipped off of their location by Marsh who was informed through Russo. This attempt fails as the unit successfully dispatch them, Reacher finds a cell phone in the pocket of one of the bikers and calls Langston to inform him that it didn't end in the way Langston wanted it to. Langston tells Reacher that he is causing an expensive operation a lot of problems and offers to bribe him to stay out his operation. However, Reacher rebuffs him and tells him that he wants to throw Langston out of a helicopter. Elsewhere, A.M. contacts Langston while he is driving from Denver to NY and tells him that the deal has not gone smoothly and that he may need to adjust the price accordingly. Langston tells him that there shouldn't be any further problems as he is dealing with Swan's old friends.

Later, Langston goes to the engineering lab and tells Johnson that the broker needs him to show the process of chip installation and wants to know how long the tutorial would take. After being assured it's a quick process, Langston receives a call from Marlo Burns who unbeknownst to him is now working with Reacher and his companions to put an end to his operation. She tells Langston that she and her daughter had been threatened by Reacher and is afraid for what they could do to her. Langston tells her not to worry and offers her protection and asks for a meeting point. Afterwards, Langston and some of his men arrive at the arranged location to pick up Marlo and her daughter but they are ambushed by Reacher and the other remaining members of the 110th. After Reacher takes out Langston's men, he corner's Langston, only to have a helicopter arrive on time to take him away.

After Langston discovered Grant is still alive from his group's pursument of Jane Burns, he sends another of his subordinate to silence him only to encounter Reacher and Neagley who had arrived there beforehand. They kill him and contacts Langston and tell him that he's lost two more men. Langston says that's OK as he had captured Dixon and O'Donnell at the Jade East Motel when Langston had his friends in the NYPD track Russo's car through GPS. Langston demands the pair surrender themselves to a R&D facility in Rockland County until the trade is over and then he will let them go once Langston and his associates have their 65 million dollars. Reacher expresses skepticism but Langston tells him that the matter has gone on long enough and by leaving more bodies, his terrorism deal will soon be discovered by external sources. Reacher decides to fake Neagley's death, claiming that the assassin had successfully killed her but was then slain by Reacher. Langston threatens to kill O'Donnell and Dixon if he alerts the authorities, Reacher promises to arrive later in the night as to not draw police's attention to the meeting location and demands proof of life upon arrival.

As Reacher and Neagley approach the facility, Langston has already started his torture to Dixon and O'Donnell. After being notified of Reacher's arrival, Langston comes out to greet him with a restraint Dioxn and O'Donnell on a gurney. Reacher is handcuffed and led into the facility with O'Donell and Dixon still strapped onto gurneys and being wheeled behind him. Langston gets a call on his cell phone and tells his men to get Reacher ready, he receives information that Neagley's body is not present in the morgue. As they approach him, Reacher is able to subdue them all even while handcuffed. However, Langston takes control of the situation and tells Reacher that he lied about Neagley's death. Reacher tells him to put his gun down as he can't shoot him to which Langston agrees and instead shoots O'Donnell in the leg and then telling his men to dig out the bullet because they can't leave evidence behind. Langston puts Reacher in a chair and punches at him demanding information on Neagley's whereabouts. After failed to extract info, he tells him that he is as stubborn as the men that he used to command, including Swan, who refused to be bribed and take a side with Langston. Reacher asks Swan's whereabouts only for Langston to taunt him with his dismembered remains.

Langston tells Lennox to load Dixon and O'Donnell onto the helicopter. However, Neagley alongisde Lavoy's security details is able to create a distraction that allows Reacher to remove from the sole of his shoe the brad that he had taken previously and uses it to pick the lock on his handcuffs. Lavoy's team breaks into the facility and begin to engage Langston's men in a firefight. During the gun battle, Langston and Parker run out to the helicopter and climb aboard. After all of Langston's men are killed, Reacher runs out to the New Age helicopter and is able to grab onto one of the rear wheels and pull himself up onto the helicopter as it takes off. On the chopper, Langston orders Parker to open the door and prepares to throw Dixon overboard. Reacher climbs in and tackles Parker and Langston with O'Donnell's assistance. The fight causes Dixon to nearly drop to her death but Reacher manages to grab on her gurney which leaves Reacher vulnerable to Langston and Parker's attack. Reacher blocks his attacks which allows the time for Dixon to loose her restrains and stabs Parker in the neck with a knife that was still embedded in Reacher by the former. Langston is dumbfounded at the fight's conclusion and pleads for his life and is willing to tell him the name of Little Wing's buyer and the location of the meeting but Reacher tosses him out of the helicopter, avenging his friends' deaths. Langston falls to his death and his corpse is impaled within a tree's stump.
