Synopsis[]
As the team close in on Langston, two members of the 110th face danger, compelling Reacher to devise a dangerous plan to rescue them.
Plot[]
After the shootout, the team converges back at Jade Motel where Neagley suggests to shelter the Burns back in Roscoe Conklin's house in Margrave but Reacher objects, citing Malcolm Lavoy had found out their roles in the counterfeiting operation 2 years prior, suggests Shane Langston might also track down and discover them there as well, and does not want to endanger Roscoe or the duo in Margrave. Reacher suggests to hide them in a place digitally and emotionally removed, Dixon tells them she had gone to Buffalo to work in-house at a debt collection agency for 6 months shortly after her discharge from the military. She had rented a private residence which is only reachable through her cell phone as it's in a non-local area code and trusts her friend who is a landlord and former firefighter named Bob Lee. To prove his trustworthiness, Dixon says Lee had taken her to Kenmore Mercy hospital after driving her through a blizzard. They are still in contact and is confident he will help them. Reacher nonchalantly reassures them it will be over soon and just had to kill a few more. O'Donnell comes in and supplies everyone with energy bars. Reacher states the plan is to have O'Donnell and Dixon safely escort the Burns while he and Neagley will deal with Drew Marsh after he had inadvertently caused Russo's death.
Sometime later, Reacher and Neagley arrived at his residence. Before entering, he places Neagley as backup, she tells him to make Marsh feel the pain he caused in responsible to Russo's murder who she deemed was a good man. Entering, Reacher sees Marsh urgently clearing out his stuff and taking the bag of cash with him into hiding. When Reacher makes himself known, Marsh eyes his gun but Reacher had suspected he would. Reacher asks if his bag is equal to the life of a honest cop, Marsh denies any intentions or knowledge related to Russo's death and thought he would take the money and cites their shared history as justification. Reacher states their history was the reason why he did not commit the murder himself and claims cowards like him never like to get dirty as he had known the consequences of reporting to Langston about Russo's intention of hiding in Staten Island alongside Jane. Reacher gives him two options in which he either tells him information and turn himself in or try to kill him in a gunfight as Marsh had continuously been eyeing for the gun. Marsh chooses the latter but Reacher pins him against the wall by pushing the table into him, Reacher asks him of the time and location in which Little Wing missiles and chips will come into possession of terrorist but he denies any information related to Langston's plans though he cites Grant - who Neagley had run over - has information related to it and tells Reacher he did not die but was taken to intensive care unit at a hospital in Mount Sinai. Afterwards, Reacher chastises him being an honest cop was not difficult and reminds him of his role in Russo's demise, Marsh tries to grab for the gun but is shot in the head by Reacher who takes a wad of cash and pays back Neagley, who storms in after hearing gunshot, for what he feels she is owed..
Back in Jade East Motel, O'Donnell and Dixon prepare for the Burns to travel to Buffalo, O'Donnell gives Marlo and Jane caps to disguise their identity. Noticing Jane is nervous, O'Donnell tells her a story of how he teaches his sons to wear them in a classic look and promises her they will be safe after the case is over. After they left, Dixon notices his tenderness to Jane and tells O'Donnell to drop the case as he has a higher stake than them but he refuses.
Back in the unit's days, the 110th prepares to leave for their training holiday, Reacher informs them of a heroin sale that will occur in an abandoned military-owned land in evening. Dixon reminds him they are not allowed to pursue per Fields orders. Lowrey asks Reacher if he understands the consequences of finishing the operation, Reacher states the sale tonight will be the culmination of their hard work of 2 years in Operation Kite Runner. He acknowledges defying a direct order may result in permanently damaging their career and potential dishonorable discharges from the military or assignment to military stations in undesirable locations, but clarifies finishing will result in severing a drug trade from further occurring. Reacher gives them the option to leave but, to his surprise, all members opted to stay and see through.
That night, Lieutenant Hughes alongside Tsai and Molnar arrive at the trade off but are intercepted by Reacher's team who tell them to surrender in order to conduct their investigation. Reacher tasks Neagley and Lowrey to oversee the surrendered soldiers while the rest search for signs of narcotics. Initially, they are unable to find any traces much to Franz's frustration and Hughes's mockery. Reacher looks at one of the tire and notices a rubber plug patched and asks O'Donnell for his switchblade. Upon making a hole, heroin begins to pour out with the rest confirming all tires have been patched. Reacher prepares to arrest them, but drug dealers rush in and the soldiers all scatter. Neagley kills Tsai in a gunfight with Lowrey struggling to overpower Molnar until shot in the head by Neagley. Reacher and the rest kill the offensive party except for Hughes who flees. Hughes tries to escape by climbing a fence but is run down by Reacher. Hughes' leg is broken in the fall and is arrested.
The next day, the unit celebrates their successful completion and they start to pack away, Franz prints out the photo taken at the campfire and hands them out as keepsakes. Swan plays his guitar and the unit starts to sing along. During their celebration, Fields comes in and informs them the unit is disbanded and furiously reprimands them for their actions as he was recently scolded by the colonel on costing him his promotion. Reacher is adamant that he will not apologize for the unit's actions. After Fields leaves, the unit resumes their celebration.
At the present, Reacher and Neagley disguise themselves as nurses and visit Grant's room. As Grant realizes, Reacher threatens to tear his trachea from his throat if he tries to yell for help. The pair questions him about the time and location of the deal, but denies any knowledge of the meeting, Reacher informs him he will be disposed of by Langston as he is now considered as a loose end. However, Grant continues to withheld information, Reacher decides to inject air into his bladder through the catheter and threaten to tear his urethra apart. Initially, Grant refuses but is forced to spill after immense pain. He tells him the meeting will take place at 5:00am the following day but does not know the location. Afterwards, Reacher tells him dying from his torture would make the pair look suspicious and instead opts to force an embolism by injecting air into his IV and bloodstream as payback for murdering Russo and attempting to kill Jane. Grant convulses and dies as they leave and the nurses rushing and trying to resuscitate him but fail. On their way out, they encountered one of Langston's assassins, posing as a nurse. Upon realizing his cover is blown, the assassin tries to hide, forcing Neagley and Reacher to split up and search for him. When Neagley encounters him, a fight ensues, and Reacher later assists her. He dies from having his throat cut with a bone saw. Reacher expresses his ire in not able to interrogate him, Neagley take his phone out and Reacher calls Langston.
At the parking lot, Reacher lets Langston know his assassin is dead, but learns he had captured O'Donnell and Dixon at the Jade East Motel when Langston had NYPD track Russo's car through GPS. Langston demands them to surrender themselves to a R&D facility in Rockland County until the trade is over and will let them go once Langston and his associates have their 65 million dollars. Reacher expresses skepticism but Langston tells him the matter has gone on long enough and by leaving more bodies, his deal will soon be discovered by external sources. Reacher decides to fake Neagley's death, claiming his assassin had successfully killed her but was then slained by Reacher. Langston threatens to kill O'Donnell and Dixon if he alerts the authorities, Reacher promises to arrive later at night to not draw police's attention and demands proof of life upon arrival. After the call, Neagley tells Reacher Langston will know her body won't be at the coroner but he assures her he had just bought them time. Reacher calls Senator Lavoy and asks for his security team's assistance to which he is willing to provide, Lavoy affirms he had no intentions of taking people's lives and only wants to do right by the country but he tells him to talk to a priest if he wants absolution and informs him of the plan tonight.
Outside the R&D facility, Reacher and Neagley oversee the premises and notice it's secured tight and its fences electrified after a few drunken teens mess around in the area. After seeing their display, Reacher comes up with an idea and plans to execute it from the inside and takes a pin that holds New Age's binder from their loot in the company's NY HQ. Elsewhere, A.M. meets Oleg who has delivered the missiles for inspection and verifies the good's integrity, A.M. tells Oleg to take him to the engineer that holds Little Wing's chips. Inside the facility, O'Donnell and Dixon are tortured by Parker and Lennox with O'Donnell pointing out the hypocrisy in Lennox's feelings about killing a man he had served with for years. Outside, Reacher prepares to execute until Neagley tells him the case they are working on is similar to Operation Kite Runner, knowing it was a losing proposition and got paid for it as the case caused the unit to be disbanded and is scared that this case will kill off the entire unit, leaving her the only member left. Reacher tells her everyone dies eventually but if they can balanced out both then they will not have any regrets. Additionally, Reacher grimly cheers her up she will not be the only member long as they will come after her in 24 hours if their plan fails. After their conversation, Reacher walks into the facility with his weapon confiscated by Pierce, and Langston greet him with O'Donnell and Dixon still alive and strapped in their gurneys with Reacher's arrival shocks Dixon.
