The Victor Hobie Case was a criminal plot orchestrated by Carl Allen (operating under the stolen identity of Hook Hobie), involving identity fraud, extortion, and multiple murders. The case began when private investigator Costello was brutally murdered in Key West while searching for Jack Reacher on behalf of Jodie Jacob. This triggered a deadly chain of events that led Reacher to New York, where he uncovered Hobie’s secret past.
Hobie, a fugitive who had assumed the identity of a dead Vietnam soldier, was running a financial extortion scheme against businessman Chester Stone while eliminating anyone who could expose him. As Reacher investigated, he became a target of Hobie’s assassins. The conflict culminated in Hobie’s office, where Reacher exposed his real identity and, after a violent confrontation, shot and killed him, bringing his reign of terror to an end.
Background[]
In 1971, during the Vietnam War, Carl Allen, a soldier in a helicopter crash, was presumed dead. However, he survived and used the opportunity to assume the identity of Victor Hobie, a fellow soldier who died in the same crash. With no records proving otherwise, Allen returned to the U.S. under Hobie’s name and went into hiding, eventually establishing himself as a ruthless loan shark and financial manipulator in New York.
Over the years, operating as Hook Hobie, Allen built a criminal empire through fraud, extortion, and murder. His business involved trapping struggling companies in financial deals they couldn’t escape, using intimidation and violence to take control. One of his latest targets was Chester Stone, a businessman in financial trouble. Hobie planned to manipulate Stone into signing over his company, using threats against his wife Marilyn Stone as leverage.
Meanwhile, Jodie Jacob, the daughter of retired General Leon Garber, hired private investigator Costello to locate Jack Reacher. Costello’s search led him to Key West, where he was brutally murdered by Hobie’s men to prevent any interference. As a result, Reacher was drawn into the case, tracking Costello’s death back to New York, where he uncovered Hobie’s true identity and criminal operations.
During the events, Sheryl, a real estate agent, was caught in the crossfire when Marilyn Stone attempted to sell her house. Though she was beaten brutally and threatened, she survived and was forced to stay silent out of fear.
The conflict escalated into a final showdown in Hobie’s office, where Reacher exposed his true identity and, after a violent fight, shot and killed Hobie, bringing an end to his schemes.

Aftermath[]
After Jack Reacher killed Carl Allen (Hook Hobie) in his office, his criminal empire collapsed. Chester Stone and his wife Marilyn Stone were freed from Hobie's extortion scheme, and their company was no longer under threat.
Reacher also revealed the truth about Victor Hobie's identity to the authorities, ensuring that Carl Allen’s deception was finally exposed. The real Victor Hobie’s parents, who had spent decades believing their son was missing in action, were finally given closure when Reacher confirmed their son had died in Vietnam.
With the case resolved, Reacher declined any offers to settle down and moved on, as he always did, leaving Jodie Jacob behind to continue her life without him.
