Tony Swan was a U.S. Army Major selected by Reacher to be one of the founding members of the U.S. Army 110th MP Special Investigations Unit. Later, he is employed by Marlo Burns as an employee to the security team and act as an undercover agent and discovers Little Wing and it's international arms dealing by Shane Langston. However, Swan is rendered missing following some members of the unit.

Biography[]

Initially, Swan does not get along with other members of the team and this dynamic is put to the test when Reacher treats them to a round of beer in a nearby Officer's Club. In the club, Swan was one of the members that rose to defend Neagley after the Club's bartender insults her due to her rank. A fight ensues between the Reacher's unit and the patrons with Swan participating as well. After the fight, the members take their party to a campfire where they sing and dance around the fire with Swan playing songs to liven up the party. The team commemorates their first night as a unit.

Operation Kite Runner[]

During their time together in the unit, Swan alongside Dixon, Reacher and O'Donnell respond to a murder case in which Simms is found shot dead outside of a pub. Swan is able to confirmed that Simms was not a bar's patron and had not been involved in any fights beforehand. Reacher deduces that Simms had not been in the bar and he had been running for his life, and shot in the back by an unknown assailant. Additionally, Reacher deduces that the ink smudged in his palm resembles a fighter kite which is popular in Afghanistan as well as heroine's production. Reacher links the case to another case that was currently investigated by Dixon. From then on, Reacher dubs the operation as Kite Runner.

The members of the unit work on the case for 2 consecutive years. In one instance, the unit accomplishes a drug bust in which they acquired 48 bags of heroin. In another, the unit infiltrates a dealing in an attempt to find who sourced the drugs. Reacher and Swan posed as dealers while Orozco, Neagley, Franz and Sanchez were waiting in the van and eavesdrop on the deal. They plan to bust the dealers and interrogate them to find their main heroine source once the deal has been finalized. However, a dealer named Zimmerman recognizes Swan as military when the former sold him the guitar. Knowing that the deal will go south, Reacher kills most of the dealers saved for the boy with others in the van rushing inside, Swan was shot in the collarbone while shielding Reacher from another dealer's attack. Reacher urges one of his team to call an ambulance for Swan. Fortunately, Swan survived his injuries.

When they are about to close the case on the operation, the unit's commanding officer Hortense Fields orders them to quietly close the investigation as it would leave a bad mark on the Commanding Officer's stellar military career and threatens to charge the members with minor penalties and honorable discharges. When the unit's prepares to leave on their training holiday, Reacher informs the unit that the heroin sale will occur that evening in an abandoned military-owned land, knowing of the consequences of finishing the operation. Reacher offers them a choice to walk away but Swan among others choose to stay. That night, Hughes alongside Tsai and Molnar arrive at the trade off location but are intercepted by Reacher's team who tell them to surrender in order to conduct their investigation. Initially, they are unable to find any traces of heroin but Reacher notices the rubber patch and the unit soon discovers the heroine. Reacher prepares to arrest the soldiers, but drug dealers rush in and the soldiers all scatter. Swan joins his unit in killing all of the offensive party except for Hughes who runs away from the area but is captured by Reacher.

The next day, the unit celebrates the operation's successful completion. During their celebration, Fields informs them the unit is disbanded and furiously reprimands them for their actions. After Fields leaves, the unit resumes their celebration. Shortly after, they are disbanded and members went their separate way but they remain in contact with each other except for Reacher.

Civilian Life[]

Sometime after leaving the Military, Swan resides in Queens, New York where he raised his dog Maisi. He and other members save for Reacher attended Stanley Lowrey's funeral when he is killed in a car crash and attended Calvin Franz's wedding when he is married to Angela.

New Age Infiltration[]

Shortly after New Age became involved in the Little Wing project, their Director of Operations, Marlo Burns became suspicious of the actions of the New Age security team and their Director Langston. She hired Swan to conduct a quiet investigation into the members of the security team. After his investigation, Swan reported back to Marlo that her suspicions were correct and that Langston had made a deal with a known international arms dealer to sell him 650 Little Wing systems. He found out that a quality engineer was falsifying inspection records by marking 650 good microchips as defective and providing the chips to Langston. During his investigations, Swan reached out to other former members of the 110th Special Investigators asking for their assistance. The actions of Swan, and then his former colleagues came to the attention of Langston who took deadly action against all of them. He alongside his subordinates tortured and killed Calvin Franz, Manuel Orozco and Jorge Sanchez. As for Swan, Langston decided to pin all the blame for the criminal activities on him and tortured and killed Swan, but then cut off his thumbs and removed one of his eyes so that he could make it appear that Swan was still alive by using his fingerprints and retina scans on Little Wing's delivery shipment from Denver facility to New York. Shortly after, Swan's remains were disposed saved for his eye which is used to taunt the surviving members of the unit who is still believed in his survival.

Following his death, Langston forced Marlo to cover up Swan's findings in threat of her daughter's life. The former began to target the remaining members of the 110th Unit in fear that the surviving members are after him. During Reacher's investigation, Neagley, Dixon and O'Donnell became increasingly convinced of Swan's complicitness in Langston's operation but Reacher firmly believes on his friend's innocence. In the end, they piece together info of Swan's role and ultimately learn of his fate from Langston himself, much to their horror. Following this, Reacher and his unit kill Langston and his accomplices, ultimately avenging his death alongside others. After recovering bonds from A.M., they decide to donate to an animal shelter in honour of him and his dog Maisi.
