Tony Swan was a U.S. Army Major selected by Reacher to be one of the founding members of the U.S. Army 110th MP Special Investigations Unit. Later, he was employed by Marlo Burns as an employee to the security department and worked undercover to discovered Little Wing and its international arms dealing by Shane Langston. However, Swan was found out and killed for his meddling along with Franz, Orozco, and Sanchez.
Biography[]
Initially, Swan did not get along with other members of the team. The dynamic was tested when Reacher treated them to a round of beer in a nearby officer's club. There, Swan was one of the members that rose to defend Neagley after the bartender insulted her due to her rank. A fight ensued between 110th unit and the patrons with Swan participating as well. After the fight, the members celebrated at a campfire where Swan played songs to liven up the party. The team commemorated their first night as a unit.
Operation Kite Runner (2010s)[]
During his tenure in the unit, Swan and others responded to a murder case in which private Simms is found dead outside a pub. Swan confirmed Simms was not a patron and had not been involved in any fights beforehand. Reacher deduced Simms was running for his life, but was shot in the back by an unknown assailant. Additionally, the ink smudged in Simms palm resembled a fighter kite, popular in Afghanistan as well as heroine's production. Reacher linked the case to another investigated by Dixon. From then, Reacher dubbed the operation as Kite Runner.
They worked on the case for 2 years. In one instance, the unit accomplished a drug bust, acquiring 48 bags of heroin. In another, they infiltrated a dealing, in an attempt to find who sourced the drugs. Reacher and Swan posed as dealers while Orozco, Neagley, Franz and Sanchez were waiting in the van and eavesdropped on the deal. They planned to bust the dealers and interrogated them to find their main heroine source once the deal had been finalized. However, a dealer named Zimmerman recognized Swan as military when the former sold him the guitar. Knowing the deal would go south, Reacher killed most of the dealers saved for Zimmerman with others in the van rushing inside, Swan was shot in the collarbone while shielding Reacher from another dealer's attack. Reacher urged one of his team to call an ambulance for Swan, and was treated.
When the case was near completion, the unit's commanding officer Hortense Fields ordered them to quietly close the investigation as it would leave a bad mark on the commanding officer's stellar military career and threatened to charge them with minor penalties and dishonorable discharges. When he prepared to leave on his training holiday, Reacher informed the unit the heroin sale would occur that evening in an abandoned military-owned land. Knowing the consequences of finishing the operation. Reacher offered them to walk away but Swan among others chose to stay. That night, Hughes,Tsai and Molnar arrive at the trade off but were intercepted by 110th, and was to surrender in order to conduct their investigation. Initially, they were unable to find traces of heroin but Reacher noticed the rubber patch and they soon discovered the heroine. Reacher prepared to arrest the soldiers, but drug dealers rushed in and they all scattered. Swan joined his unit in killing all offensive party except for Hughes who attempted to flee but was captured by Reacher.
The next day, they celebrated the operation's successful completion. During their celebration, Fields informed they were to be disbanded and reprimanded them. After Fields left, they resumed their celebration. Shortly after, they were disbanded and other members went their separate way but remained in contact with each other except for Reacher.[1][2]
Civilian Life[]
Sometime after leaving, Swan took residence in Queens, New York where he raised his dog Maisi. He and others, except for Reacher attended Stanley Lowrey's funeral when he was killed in a car crash and attended Calvin Franz's wedding when he was married to Angela.[1]
New Age Infiltration[]
Shortly after New Age became involved in the Little Wing project, their Director of Operations, Marlo Burns became suspicious of the actions taken by New Age security team and their Director Langston. She hired Swan to conduct a quiet investigation into the department's members. After his investigation, Swan reported to Marlo her suspicions were correct and Langston had made a deal with a known international arms dealer to sell him 650 Little Wing systems. He found a quality engineer was falsifying inspection records by marking 650 operational microchips as defective and provided them to Langston. Seeing the large scale of his investigations, Swan reached out to former members of 110th , asking for their assistance. Swan and his former colleagues's action attracted Langston's action who took all of them. Langston and his men tortured and killed Calvin Franz, Manuel Orozco and Jorge Sanchez. As for Swan, Langston pinned all the blame for his criminal activities on him and killed Swan, but then cut off his thumbs and his eye so he could create the illusion Swan was still alive by using his fingerprints and retina scans on Little Wing's delivery shipment from Denver facility to New York. Shortly after, Swan's remains were disposed saved for his eye which was used to taunt the surviving members who still believed in his survival.
Following his death, Langston forced Marlo to cover up Swan's findings in threat of her daughter's life. The former began to target the remaining members of 110th due to his paranoia the surviving members were after him.[1][3] During Reacher's investigation, Neagley, Dixon and O'Donnell became increasingly convinced of Swan's complicitness in Langston's operation but Reacher believed on his innocence.[4][5][6] In the end, they pieced together info of Swan's role and ultimately learnt his fate from Langston, much to their horror. Following this, they killed Langston and his accomplices, avenging his death alongside others. After recovering bonds from A.M., they donated to an animal shelter in honour of him and his dog Maisi.[7]
