Tasked with transporting cargo for his new employer Zachary Beck, Reacher must juggle the involvement of the DEA and a nosy new associate.

Plot[]

Jack Reacher calls Susan Duffy of his discovery and suspected Teresa Daniel was moved away due to too many uncertainties present within the property. As dawn rises, Reacher spots John Chapman Duke with communications technician Ángel Dole and barely makes it back to his room. Back at the house, Duffy tries to brutally get information out of John Cooper, an convict turned Richard's bodyguard but is escorted outside by Guillermo Villanueva. He warns her further provocation will create more troubles for them as they were illegally detaining him. Elsewhere, Duke tasks Reacher to travel with Dole as they had traced the vehicles back to state evidence lot and were tasked to trace the kidnappers. Noticing the error in their plans, Reacher contacts Duffy of his assignment and informs her the grenade did not leave a bloody mess behind, jeopardising their operation if they spot the car in pristine condition. Duffy panics and asks Reacher to buy her time while she tries to get the bodyguard's car remove.

In the car, Dole reveals he was the one who run Reacher's prints and also former Army with numerous connections, effectively making him the communications technician of Beck's security team. Furthermore, Duke had been a former low-level worker before being promoted to Zachary's "Number 2" and Reacher is surprised at the security team's lack of loyalty towards Zachary Beck. Elsewhere, Duffy and Villanueva arrive at the impound lot before the latter stations outside to warn her of Reacher's upcoming arrival. She struggled to move the vehicle and is forced to hide upon being warned by Villanueva. During their travels, Dole plans to bribe the officer in charged of the night or kill him if further complications arises. Upon there, Dole is unable to convince Edmonds to let him before Reacher is forced to knock him unconscious, saving his life indirectly. Seeing the vehicle left untouched, Reacher distracts Dole and tells him the car's model was one of many in the road and Beck's car remained in a temperature-controlled lot to preserve DNA evidence. Seemingly satisfied with the answer, they depart.

Back at the estate, Reacher bumps into Annette, a French maid who was cleaning his room. After confirming nothing was taken, Reacher rests before being told by Zachary to gather at the gym with Duke and Paulie. Zachary checks on his son Richard who he reassures the kidnappings would not happened again but the former is unconvinced. In the gym, Paulie challenges him for strength in a Bavarian arm wrestling. Unable to overcome him, Reacher provokes him further but is stopped by Duke who requested him to transport goods down to New London, Connecticut in six hours. On route, Reacher requests Duffy and the team to pull over at a nearby rest stop to inspect the goods. In addition, he requests Frances Neagley to run background checks on Paulie, Duke and Ángel Dole and asks to not further involve herself beside support much to her confusion.

At a rest stop, Duffy employs New Haven PD Dick Grunert and his drug-sniffing canine to track down signs of narcotics or body. However, it turned up empty, Reacher realises this was part of a loyalty test and tries to rush to the destination. On route, Duffy reveals she had asked I.C.E for search-rate statistics and discovered Zachary Beck's shipment is searched 10 times lesser than anyone else's. In turn, Reacher reveals Quinn was responsible for the death of Dominique Kohl, a girl with similar characteristics as that of Teresa Daniel though he doesn't elaborate further. At rest stop, Reacher proceeds alone to his intended destination and meets Sklar and Bellinger who tasked him to take the empty truck back to Maine.

Evening, Reacher returns and meets Ángel Dole who still had doubts about his given reasons from before. Dole had discovered the car's status did not fit with his story and deduces he was working with feds and threatens to tell Duke. Unable to keep up with his cover, Reacher impales Dole with the paper memo holder and hides his body beneath the desk. Outside, Duke awaits Reacher who excuses his stalling due to Dole's excessive talkativeness.
